Smart? They will dehydrate instead of breaking 1/16" of ice on a pond, or a water tank... They will eat too much grain until a stomach explodes (Ok I thought my stomach was going to explode a few times too) They can't survive a simple snowstorm, like deer, and they let a 200lb person scare them into doing what they want to them. I don't think they are smart..and I don't think they get bored, like horses do.
but then, you have to figure the smarts of the individual who will keep cows where ice actually forms on water. what kind of person would let the cow die of thirst?
why would you leave an animal that you chose to take care of to fend for itself in a snowstorm anyway? take that fence down, leave them cows alone and see how quick they head for Dixie. An animal can only work with the environment that they are placed in. if left to completely fend for themselves, they would move around as mother nature dictated. like they did before we started fencing them in.
so i still say they dont get bored. i think they have times where they are content though.

Just to clarify... I chopped ice every morning before school and every night when I got home... These days of 4x4's and weather radar, we don't leave cows out to freeze, but in my grandfathers day, it was a reality for them to dehydrate - When all you had to get the herd was a horse or mule, and it was just as risky for you as them to go out in a storm you didn't know was coming. Sometimes those incredibly bright cows, wander through a fence and get lost, and are very hard to find... Shoot, there where 8 people this year alone that died on the interstate freezing to death here in KS.... Guess they wheren't much smarter then our 4 footed bovine friends.

2 pages.. i find it quite amusing that it did 3... we been taking bets at work how much longer this would go on...
i love a job where i have time to get bored.
I have no idea if cows get bored or not but I have decided that I must be very bored to read two pages about it. What was that saying from Monte Walsh "you ain't got no idea just how little I care" or something like that..
