standard inline 6 maintenance questions

I've read that these engines have hydraulic valves.
Does this mean that periodic valve adjustment is not needed unless the engine is rebuilt? If not, what's the admustment cycle? 60,000 miles?

I just replaced the H20 pump, thermostat, hoses, plugs, cap/rotor, wires and belts and flushed/filled cooling system. Next comes new vacuum lines and gas lines (this weekend). Probably fuel filter soon.

How often should the timing be adjusted? Anything else i'm not thinking of?
The truck has been driven only about 2 or 3 times a month for the last 4 or 5 years so it's done some sitting.

I have the ford 1980 engine shop manual, but it doesn't cover service intervals... or at least i haven't found that part in it.

Your valves do not nee to be adjusted because, as you pointed out they are hydraulic. Checking the timing is something you shouldn't have to do very often, unless it starts acting up or running poorly, then it is one of the things you might look at. Other than that I just check it when I do plugs. Your shop manual or a haynes will describe how. Matt.

Once the timing is set you shouldn't have to mess with it any more. On a typical V8 it is checked frequently because the timing chain starts stretching when the engine is new and continues to stretch for the life of the engine. The 300 uses gears to control the cam, so the timing can't vary with age unless there are bigger problems than the timing being off.

the lifters are hydraulic and do not require adjustment, have not seen any hydraulic valves to date, standard maintenance as with any engine will keep it going. you may want to check a few websites on oils and recomendations, some of the independents are recommending a 15w40 oil is best and will help your engine last longer, also change your antifreeze at least every 2 years to keep internal corrosion and build up down. I suggest that when you change the coolant change the thermostat to for the price it is worth the time.

he he he.
guys, i already mentioned that i did the coolant and thermostat.
but thanks though.

bigredsbronco: yes, that's what i meant was hydraulic lifters not valves. sometimes i just don't pay enough attention to what i type.

thanks much all. Looks like i'm on top of it then (for now).
I appreciate the info and am especially thrilled that it's a gear driven timing and i won't have to worry about that as much.

that's what they call an interference system right?
