I've noticed that Verizon is starting to advertise their Push-To-Talk feature again, at least in my neck of the woods (Northern NJ). I was curious if anyone has this and what they think of it? I've heard that it has gotten much better from when they first introduced it but I don't know anyone that has it. It is all hearsay. I've had a Nextel phone in the past through work and the service in my area is horrible. Not sure how it is now that they have merged with sprint. I love Verizon's phone service and I travel allot back and forth from NJ to PA. Anyone got any comments on Verizon's Push-To-Talk or any current personal experience with it? Thanks a bunch.
They still have some problems during setup meaning the time between when you initally press the ptt to when the call connects. They are doing the best they can on a system that was not designed for that purpose. Nextel on the otherhand was designed to do just that. Nextel was originally a trunking system (basicly 2 way or walkie talkie) then adapted to be a cell phone. The direct connect feature is something Nextel will have over all the others and as long as you can deal with lousy coverage they are o.k. with marginal voice quality. If you need the best coverage/voice quality either Verizon or AT&T/Cingular can not be beat. Now that AT&T has been bought out by Cingular they are the biggest by far with almost 50% more cell sites as long as your going with the new 3G technology. Their older 850 Mhz TDMA system is all but obsolete.
We tried Verizon for a while at work..got to know it as "push to wait". Went back to Nextel the same week. Verizon is gonna lose their shirt on this one if they dont have it fixed this time around
lol, nobody has anything on Nextel. Next is coast-to-coast and instant.
I was in myrtle beach S.C. (Atlantic ocean) talking to my friend who was in cali on the beach. Nextel has so much better service and there is no delay. In Quarter two in 2007 nextel will have worldwide direct connect. Think of that, I love nextel.
Also, nextel and sprint are merging and nextel has better service out there (I live in charlotte) than I think most of its competition. I don't know how it is in your area but nextel is really amazing.
Its horrible up here in MA,i had mine for 3 days and just yesterday i brought it back,i shoulda known when the sales guy said"its greatly improved over the last time we had it" and he tried to do it over 2 phones and said "it takes just a second!" well 5 minutes later when i was walking to him at the counter it finally did it....i say pass on it
I turn my speaker off in restaurants and most public places actually... not only is it rude to force others to listen to your conversations (especially when they're arguments or petty gossip, people!!!) it's disrespectful of all parties involved. None of my friends ever surprise me with "Hey, what's up" over my speaker except my little sister, actually, but it's because she knows I don't have unlimited DC and she does, so she's doing it to save me some $$... luckily I usually have speaker volume low anyway, and sometimes she does alert me first. I really hope Nextel's coverage improves vastly over the next year, because I don't get service on the Southfield Fwy, or in my apartment much. I noticed service in my apartment is much improved since last spring, so possibly it's already getting better? I had Verizon and I was not impressed... I never got service at my parents' house, it was really expensive, and my phone was a piece of crap so I never heard what the other person was saying and my phrase was "Could you say that again... wait, didn't hear you..." until I got my Nextel. Love 2-way. Just love it. Used properly, that is...
(I heard that in my area Verizon's 2-way sucks, don't know about anywhere else)
in public i usually have the speaker turned way down low, in a resturant and places like that i just turn the ringer, speaker, the whole nine yards off cause it bothers me when i am watching a movie or trying to eat and someones phone rings. i have never had a problem with nextel, and in my opinion as far as phones go they are the best thing since sliced bread. ive had most of the providers available in my area and they just dont compare, i could get more conversation across using string and two coke cans than with verizon.
My daughter has one of those picture taking cell phones on Cingular service. As I write this, she is on a hiking trail with some friends ten miles out of nowhere up in the woods of Arkansas. The park rangers or whoever they saw at the begining of the trail told them the phones would not work up there, but she was able to call me last night from where they made camp. She said she only had one or two bars showing but she boomed right in here.

Well I guess it all depends on where you live. Like I stated, Nextel in my area is horrible. I guess I'll stick with Verizon for now since everyone I know has it and it is free to talk to them. I'm not going to waist my money on the push-to-talk since it doesn't seem like to many people are having good luck with it. I'm hopeing Nextel will start to get much much better now that they have merged with Sprint. Oh well I guess I'll stay contractless for now.
Thanks for all the replies,
Adam
I have the new Sprint Ready Link service and it is pretty cool, I don't think it is worth the money that I pay but my wife and I use it a good bit. Supposively with the Sprint-Nextel merger, Nextel will be switching to the 3g network and converting all thier phones to sprints new system. There are spme improvements that could be made but it has served me pretty well.
