88' Bronco, 5.0 L EFI, I was in e-bay last nite looking for parts and I keep seeing the chips advertised, 20+ HP for 10 bucks, Now I am kinda old school where we built HP and I really don't know much about ecu up-grades, dose anybody know about these things? sounds to good to be true and in my experiance it useally is...
It's a resister chip that basically fools the engine computer to thinking that the outside air is colder than it actually is, causing it to run rich. They may add power, but will kipp your mileage. I would stay away from it. Real chips and tuners have programs written specifically for the individual engine. They are thoroguhly tested and and won't harm your engine.
Thats what I was thinking, How bout the real one's? I have a AOD tranny so I know they wont do anything for shifting, are they worth the price? mostly the truck is driven on the street and some mild off roading and I also tow a trailer once and awhile.
They do give a very noticeable power increase. Probably pretty true to the 8-10% HP and 10-15% torque increases. I don't know being as old as yours is, if that makes any difference or not on how much power can be gained.
For me it was worth the price. I get a slight MPG increase to help offset the higher price of premium. The extra power is nice when passing up a hill or pulling a load.
going up hill and pulling a load would be my main motivation for doing this, you also mentioned premium gas, do you need to keep the octain up at the premium level to recieve the full benifit?
Chips need to have premium gas to get any noticeable power gains. They work by advancing timing and leaning the air/fuel ratio. Regular gasoline will cause detonation(pinging) and that is hard on your motor. Generally chips are tuned to be able to run on 91 octane, however, if you have higher octane, you can get it tuned more aggresively to take full advantage of it. Have you checked out Motorhaven.com? If you haven't, lck on "PARTS SHOP" in the upper right corner of the screen. You can see what chips are all aobut there.
