I take my pump off once a year and add some oil (80-90w) The ones up through 1996 have a plug in back and the only reason I think it is there is so you can lube it. I have rebuilt these when the casting wasn't destroyed don't fill them full I use the plug as a level gauge and only fill it full on level.
