So heres the story. I decided to shim my fuel pressure regulator. I purchased a fuel pressure gauge that mounts to test port on back of fuel filter no leaks. My friend had a shim kit (from a diesel perf provider) and is selling his truck so I am using those. They have 4 sizes .45, .55, .65, .75.
My pressure started at 48. I first tried the .65 pressure was about 60psi. Hers where things took a turn for the worst. The short version is, I ran out of fuel (driveway is on a hill so it still said 1/4 tank) anyway after my long walk to get fuel, the pressure shot up to 100. I then tried the .55 and .45 and no shim at all and the darn thing still says 100. So what am I missing? I would be happy if I could get back to stock at this point.
-I have been careful putting the cover on I dont think the spring is bound up.
-I am just hoping it doesnt have to do with running out of fuel?
-Truck runs fine, I dont really hear anything or feel anything different.
Since you ran out of fuel, running to the very last of the fuel in a tank like that, you may haver sucked up trash in to the fuel system and the trash right now may have your FPR shimmed with debris. Just a thought...
Well I thought maybe something like that too, but Ive had it apart 4 times since then I cant see anything wrong. I guess I'll do it one more time.
Also doing a search I found that some people believe that shimming cant be done on a 99+ (mine is a 2002). Which is interesting because the pictures I have seen everything looks identical to mine. Just theought I would add that too.
check to see if the FPR spring is binding or bent. basically, disassemble and reassemble, while paying very close attention to positioning the FPR cap straight on and equally tightening both screws.
