i already have an AOD sitting in my garage just waiting to mate with something. so far I'd say I'm leaning towards the cleveland. I dont think i'd really be looking for aftermarket heads, but I am eventually in a year or two getting power steering and A.C., are the brackets somewhat easy to find or would i have to get some made up?? and i take it that the 2 barrel heads would be better then the 4 barrel for what i'm lookin for????

finnly/I have not had any particular difficulty finding brackets for clevelands because of the millions of 400s that were put in station wagons etc. I did make brackets to mount the a/c compressor down low on the passenger side just to get it out of sight but that was just that, to get it out of sight. I think vintage air makes other types of a/c brackets and march performance MAY have power steering etc. hope this helps

FF56 -

I didn't even consider the 400's for parts, but you're right. The blocks are the same. What year models would I find A/C and power steering stuff on?

Thanks

So how do you turn a 351M/400M into a 351C style performer?
Yards cant give away a M motor around here.

If I cant get the kind of truck power I need I may pull the stock 1985 351W 4V. But I need some serious improvement in a E350 dually 12' box truck and dont need as much as a 460 either. I cant believe this truck (1979) came with a 302!

286merc -

Your question got me wondering the same. I have a book called "Ford Perfomance" by Pat Ganahl (ISBN 1-884089-27-5). It discusses at length all the Ford engine families and what can be done with them.

The 400 was a big lumbering (160-170 hp) engine in the 335 (Cleveland) family that was put into many Rancheros, trucks and wagons. They came in 2-barrel models only and 8:1 compression. He says that they can be hotted up with many 351C parts and made to really scream. The exception is that the 400 is basically a 351C stroked an added .50 inch. This raises the block height, uses a different crank (with larger journals) and intake manifold.

He suggested that if TRW flat top 351C pistons, a 351C cam, an Edelbrock "Streetmaster" or Holley "Street Dominator" manifold with a 600-750 4-barrel carb were added, the compression would be around 10:1 and it would really move out with tons of torque on pump gas. The 400 rods need to be bushed for the smaller 351C piston wrist pins.

Sounds like a winner to me. I recommend the book. Good reading.

To be blunt YES!!!
you need to change the pistons as they require reliefs cut in them for the valves - other than that you have to acquire a street boss manifold or do a search for pricemotorsports - they sell adaptors to allow the fitment of different manifolds - i'm building up a 302 boss and using efi from a mustang, with all the other fruit keith black, trw, je and some others all make the pistons you want - do a search for clevor and you'll find alot more info
