FPR shim question

I took the fpr apart. All I found was the brass? plunger and a spring. I thought there was a rod inside the spring. I have an early '99 psd. Is this right?

I thought only 94-97 psd were the ones you shim. anyways, you should have the brass plug, spring and the seat. The shim simply gives more spring tension.

The fuel system is different on a Superduty, and shimming doesn't work for y'all.

I am not saying who is right or wrong, as I am quite new to diesels. But I have read several forums where this is done on 1999 to 2002 PSD's and they said they have made a difference. They claim that it raises the fuel pressure and makes the engine run better.

You can shim the FPR on 99's and up. There are kits you can purchase with shims and replacement cap that raise the pressure depending on the amount of shims used. Some people have done homemade jobs using #4 washers backed to the cap where the spring sits. Each truck is a little different, so the amount of shim required changes from one to the next. I think optimum pressure is raised to around 65 psi. Factory settings is 50-55 psi.

I just went to my local hardware store and bought me a 5/32" and a 3/16" round ball bearing. They had a whole selection of sizes, just make sure of the size when you get them, in case someone has misplaced them in the compartments.

At any rate, I played with both sizes somewhat watching what pressure differences it made, the smaller 5/32" shimmed up the pressure on my 95 to 50-55 on my snap on fuel pressure guage.

Then I put the 3/16" ball in and played with that a few days and this landed me with 70-75 PSI which I left in the FPR. Seems to have been just the ticket too. I think the ball bears was about .12 cents.

I have shimmed a few others PSD with these since mine and found one FPR the 3/16" ball was a very tight fit as it was a press fit. The owner didn't care that if he wanted to change this back to stock fuel pressure he would be replacing parts, as he figured he wouldn't ever be going back to stock fuel pressure. All in all was really a simple process with how its easy to get to everything effected. Many thanks to all those here that have shared this mod with me, sure did the trick.

That's news to me. I'd always heard:
99 and up have a electric pump and dont need regulator shimming.

This guy shimmed his FPR using screws instead of washers to get the same effect. His truck is a 2001. Pictures show you how he did it.

Well that was nicely done. I sure have not heard of anyone around here shimming the newer superduties. This site rocks with the info shared... I sure didn't like the rust on those steel lines in the pic's, I think now after seeing that I will be out checking mine out for the rust LOL...Little rust would go a long way on that thin tubing...Thanks for sharing
