Ok, so the truck won't start and I am not sure if it is the FPR or the fuel pump, If someone could let me know if there is an easy way to test out each one that would be great. Also when working on the truck, I accidentally bent the spring in the FPR slightly. I did bend it back as best as I could, and that portion sits inside of the triangular piece. Would this effect the fuel pressure? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
ok well wont start is a broad description. when you say "wont start" does the starter make any attempt at turning over the engine? and yes if you bent the spring in the FPR, it will most definiatley effect the fuel pressure.
Use a stick style tire pressure gauge (preferably a cheap one since diesel is pretty hard on the rubber seals inside them) that is rated for up to 100PSI and see what kind of fuel pressure you're getting while someone cranks the engine over. You should see around 10PSI while cranking it, and around 60-70 PSI while the truck is idling (assuming you get it to start). If it is lower than that, you can shim the FPR using the BB mod, but if that doesn't bring your pressure up, you're likely dealing with a worn out fuel pump. Usually when the pumps go bad though they leak out the weep hole in the bottom of the pump and onto the top of the engine (in the valley).
Also worth trying is to flip the switch and try both tanks. That eliminates several other possibilities. Cracked fuel pickups happen occasionally and when the fuel gets down too low, the pickup tube sucks air instead of fuel.
I am going to pour some fuel in the fuel bowl, and for clarification it does turn over, just doesn't catch. I will try the other tank this morning and check the other items that are listed above. Thanks for the follow up.
