Then you already know that most people in general forget or even ignore the fact that they should on a regular basis check the simple things concerning engine preventative maintenance. Which is why I do recommend to "caulk" the airgap on 90% of Ford engines. The other 10% run there Fords for race only and normally pull the distributor out to change cams. Other engine manufactures have seen to it that a gasket is used to seal the distributor vise an o-ring. When was the last tiem you had a stuck distributor on a GM? I have only een one and that was due to the fact that there wasn't a gasket used. The sludge thorey is correct. After long periods of time it will build up if the basic engine maintenance wasn't done, oil change. Now factor in geographic climate and you can still get a corrosive lock forming between the iron block and aluminum distributor. Granted Aluminum does stop corroding after a fine layer of corrosion has formed, unless the electrons are allowed to continue transfering between the iron and steel. Liquids form this path allowing corrosion to happen at a fast then the normal rate.

I was offering the advice of sealing the distributor to prevent and to reduce the out of pocket costs for another replacement distributor down the road. Not every one has total mechanical knowledge like yourself as you think you do. I don't have all the answers but I am still open to hear what is said. Hence what this board is all about, sharing information. Nough said.

I think I suggested the gasket in an earlier post as an alternative to the "caulking" idea.
