Is this the 351? or the 302? It's a tight fit but it's not a press fit you should be able to lift it using hand tools. Take some pictures and let us see what you're doing. I would use some penetrating oil and try turning the distributor housing with a pipe wrench. Don't torque it like a main bearing cap bolt, wiggle it back and forth like a square peg stuck in a round hole.
Tried that too. the alum. is so brittle it just falling apart now. you just can't put alot of torque to it without it striping or breaking off. I think the bottom is the way to go.
You can't get to it from the bottom. Have you used penatrating oil? Have you taken out the retaning bolt and clamp? It's always something simple that's been overlooked.
