I have a LP radiant heater in my garage. I think it has about 40,000 btu's. I got it at Home Depot for about 75 bucks. It cranks heat but makes me nervous, it's basically a gas grill turned sideways. I had an incident where it didn't light right away and I got the FOOOMPH and slightly singed my eybrows and eyelashes.
I don't think I would use it around flamable gasses.

Good luck

My opinion is that radiant is more efficient. Convection doesn't get the circulation around the room unless you have a fan blowing the air.

The amount of heat you need will depend upon your location, insulation, type of construction etc, and how warm is comfortable to you. Check out some of the other threads here for additional information.

i'd say get the torpedo style ones. they're cheap and heat better because they blow the heat out where as radiant just sits there.

I bought a 55,000 btu kero heater for my 2.5 car garage and it takes about 10 mins to take the chill out and then put it at half temp and it's good to go.

Yup, agreed. I have a diesel-fired torpedo (120k btu's) for the shop (60x40x14) and it'll take the shop from 30 to 50 in an hour and a half, electronic thermostat and everything. Run's GREAT off the non-tax red fuel...

There were a couple of long threads in here on that not very long ago. Be careful with the torpedo heaters, they make at least some CO and you can get sick if you're not careful.

Thumbs up Garage Heaters

I just put a 45,000 btu Mr. Heater gas heater in my 2 car garage. It has a blower, and is vented to the outside with a horizontal vent pipe. I have it hanging from the ceiling, and this thing rocks. It is very quite, and lastnight while it was about 30 degrees outside, it took the temperature up to 70 degrees in about 45 minutes, and the thermostat shut it down, and kept it there easily. This is in a detached garage with no insulation yet.

Hey Boo
Do they make those in the diesel/kerosene powered flavor, or just NG/LP?

Garage Heaters

Momu,

I didn't look to see if they are available in anything other than gas, but I'll check it out, and let you know.

those little Mr Heater(and simalar) unit heaters only come in NG/LP. You would have to buy a regular oil burner for #2.
