Does anyone know if there is a internet source out there that sells sheet metal for fabricating? I have only found places that list what they have with no pictures of what your buying or prices.
Basically I am looking for diamond plate (aluminum or steel) or just plain steel sheet metal.
Thanks.
Kris
Most locales have a steel and metal supplier somewhere nearby. You could go there and learn the guages of and styles of stock you are looking for then you could shop on the internet for the stuff.
I just buy mine locally. When freight costs are factored in, it costs about the same to buy locally and you can see what you are getting when you pick it up. Sometimes freighted stuff will have dents/dings and then you have the hassle of returning it. If you are looking for specialty metals like sheet copper you may have to special order that any way. Here is a site that tells how thick the various guages of sheet metal are:
www.Mcmaster-carr.com is a awsome site. But you will be years ahead getting it local. It will be what you want and sometimes cut to a manageable size for you.
Well I guess I have it kind of easy, I work in the engineering department of a sheet metal fabrication shop (rooftop HVAC units) and can get anything I ever need.....sometimes I can even run some stuff through the punches and brakes. Not to mention I can buy it at the current scrap price.
If you have anything near you like that I would look into it. We sale scrap metal all the time to people who just stop buy and need some. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that ends up out in the scrap bin.
I have managed to purchase a 16ft sheet metal brake, and a 12ft shear at scrap metal price as well. Nothing wrong with either one other than they were old. Still work if I can get 3 phase power run to my shop, or convert the motors over to single phase.

Excellent advantage to buying locally. I have a great relationship with the local yard and get small quantities of otherwise very expensive stuff at scrap price.
