Do I need lifters?
I have some noisy/loose rocker arms on my '81 4.9, and was wondering how to correct this. Does it mean that a lifter(s) need replacing? Or can I buy a bit longer pushrod?

If this really bugs you, you probably need all new components-lifters, pushrods and rocker arms. You can take a chance and put some engine treatment in the oil like Rislone or some other high detergent oil like tranny fluid. These treatments break loose any lifters that may be sticking from being gummed up. This may or may not make it quiet. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it if it runs ok. I have run 302's with a little ticking noise for years with no problems.

I recently went through the same problem. Just pull the valve cover and just replace the noisy ones . replacing just the rocker arm($9) and push rods ($3) did the trick for me. Good Luck!
