What am I doing wrong? I can't get my lifters out. I get them up about 1/2" and they slide back down.
The motor is still on a pallet. Everything topside is off
TIA
David
The problem is most likely oil buildup in the lifter bore above the lifter. It can really be a bugger to get the lifters pass them.
Usually, what I do, is use a very very thin and small flat bladed screwdriver. There's a small ridge/groove inside the lifter. Put the screwdriver in that and lift the lifter up. Drop it down, lift again, drop, lift, drop, lift, etc. until the lifter finally cuts its way through the oil buildup.

David,
The problem is that oil sludge has built up in the oil gallery of the engine that supplys oil to the lifters. The lifter has an undercut in the OD that matches up with the oil gallery in the block. The undercut on the lifter has sludge built up on it. All you have to do is be patient, pull up on the lifter rotate the lifter and do it again. Do not use vise grips on the lifters as they can deform the lifters wich may deform and scratch the lifter diameters in the engine block. If this happens there is a potiential to lose oil pressure when the engine is subsequently fired up. Just take it easy and the lifters will come out.
I was doing a full rebuild when I took mine out... pulled the cam, and tapped em out with a screwdriver with the engine flipped upside down on the stand... thats probably doing it wrong though (yes, I was planning on replacing them...)

If you're going to replace them, and the screwdriver only touched the lifter itself, I can't see any harm done.
