I read the article today on the throttle cable mod and decided to go out and check my truck to see if it would need it. When I had my son mash the gas pedal to the floor the throttle only opened about 3/4 of the way open. Needless to say I did the mod and got the slack out of the cable so that now it fully opens and the difference was amazing. The throttle is so much more responsive and the truck feels like it has much more jump to it when you hit the gas. It actually jerked my head back the first time I hit the gas to take off. It is a simple and free little fix that I would encourage anyone with a Ranger with any age on it at all to at least check to see if they need it. I am really glad I did.
Remove the intake hose from the throttle body, have a friend step on the gas pedal all they way to the floor (pedal to the metal/carpet), don't stand on it, just press it to the floor, and see if the throttle plate opens all the way. If it does, then there is no need for any modding. If it doesn't, in the cab, get on your back and look under the dash at where the throttle cable goes thru the end of the gas pedal. Hold the end of the cable, then lift the gas pedal up to the vertical stop. You will now notice an inch or so of slack between the green cable spacer and the end of the gas pedal that pulls on it. You need to put plastic zip tip ties or a hose clamp around the cable to take up the space between the spacer and the pedal or between the spacer and the exposed end of the throttle cable. The mod brings the pedal up to where it should be so you don't have to mash the pedal into the carpet to go WOT.
I needed 3 ties to do my mod, just depends on how much stretch you have in your cable.
