I thought scouts used the AMC motors? Will fords bolt up to those trans and motor mounts okay? How about oil pans, headers, and accesory mounting?
I used to have a '79 scout. Loved that thing but was sooooo rusted out.
As for which motor it's really what you want. Everyone has a different opinion. I like the 351w's myself for variety and availbility of parts. Intakes headers and such.
Also if the scout came with the same 360's or 400's it will be easier to swap in one of those and not have to get custom parts for it. Custom headers can run you over 500.00 alone. That doesn't include oil pan, adapterplate or such for the transmission and/or tranfercase.
You will find that any motor swap is never as cheap as you think it will be. Just ask my friend that did the Van v10 w/6 speed into his 4.6 mustang Or my 514 into '88 mustang.
scouts came with amc 4cylinder 152 cid, 196 cid, IH 304 cid, 345 cid, 396 cid, the IH engines are very heavy the 304 is about 726 lbs the 396 is about 800 lbs I think. The Ih engines are tough but heavy they make about the same torque potential of Fords I think but more torque stock and they make it to the low revs and max out at around 3500 rpm I think.
The above build results in 368hp @ 5000rpm, 443ft-lbs @ 3500rpm, and 431ft-lbs @ 2000rpm. The torque curve is nice and flat.
So,i got this 72 ford f100, not sure if it's a 360 or 390 to start, but I want to rebuild the truck from the ground up and I need guidance on a budget build big block ford, I like the sound of the build sheet right there...
