Im not a real big 351 fan but....hes looking for a durable engine that will move him fast right? What engines are in nascars? Build up a 351 good and give her hell!
Hey now the FE was used as a nascar engine before the 351w. They use it now because theres a 358 cubic inch limit and its about the only 351 left that parts are made for. If dart or ford made a cleveland block and parts they would probaly still use it. I do think the windsor would be better suited than a sub 390 FE engine.
If you want torque out of a windsor, it makes good low end torque. it isn't a 390, but it's still good. You could stroke and poke a 351W to a 408 and have more torque than you know what to do with.
I am on a $3500 budget for the vechile the truck is free though. THE lady just wants to get rid of it because she does not like scouts. I like the 335s better than the winsors because they have better heads, I don't think I want any bigger than a 400 bacause I want ot get at least 9 mpg . I hear that the 400s are real inexpensive and 390s are expensive. I do not want ot get a quick spinning engine because I do not want to rev sky high anyway.
So that basically leaves me to choose between 351M, 400M, 390FE, 351W.
THe Modifieds; 351 and 400 are 575lbs and arent the FEs 650lbs?
If the budget is limited the 351 may be better on the weight end. The aluminum parts for the FE aren't cheap. How about picking up a cheap FI 351 and making nice with a Ford tech. Van's with these can be gotten dirt cheap.
If mpg is a concern keep this in mind, the 351w is not great on gas either. I don't know much about the 351m but I have a 360 and I have had 351w's before. performance parts for the 351 seem to be cheaper but It's hard to beat an old fe all around.
just finished looking at one of my old carcraft magazines. Using GT40-P heads, crane cam, edelbrock intake, holley 750, etc. They managed to get 374hp and 415ft/lbs out of a 351. I was higher in the rpm band than the FE is gonna be, but you could use a RV cam to swap some HP for torque. Once again this was pump gas and factory parts(except cam and intake)
All this talk of how 360's suck kind makes me want to build one. I want to do it real cheap and use the stock heads and maybe have the heads shaved and the block worked over to get more compression. People that do things the expensive way just to do it the "right" way **** me off, but if they want to throw money in the breeze I'll just try to be down wind.
in my opinion i would stay away from the modifieds (351m/400). hope i didnt make any mad. the aftermarket for the windsor is way better, and the FE is just well...cooler. again thats my opinon.
forget about weight, this is a Scout, Scouts do not care about weight. If it were me, i would find an v-8 international motor for it. They are out there
and for $3500, you could probably pull it off. If you really want a ford motor, go with the most cubic inches you can. and dont worrie about gas milage either. If you build it right, the motor will run efficient, and thats all that matters
as I stated when I first commented on this.. it sounded like you had already made up your mind. Seeing as how the 351 has been around since 69 I don't see how it's new technology. FE's are good engines, but the 360.... well do what you want.

What is wrong with a 360? Everyone complains and whines about a 360 as if they were some sort of burdon and a piece of junk. I guarantee you that if you spent the 180 bucks on a rebuild kit and maybe 100 bucks on a cam and 200 bucks on an intake you would have a rippin engine. Don't worry about the "right" way to do things. People always waste too much money on machine work just to make the engine "proper" for a rebuild. Make sure the bore is okay and then just hone it. Lap the valves in and replace valves that are beat up too badly to reuse. After that just install the rebuild kit, the intake, headers, and cam and start the engine. Honestly people who spend thousands of dollars on an engine just waste money. Also, why make a 360 into a 390? All you're doing is mixing and matching parts that weren't made to go together in an attempt to get what everyone else has. Just stay with the 360 or buy a factory 390. You people **** me off with your "proper" way of doing things.
