I think I have a problem with my starter....it's fairly new(6-7 month old)....but recently after I start the truck (engine turns over and catches) i hear a "whirring" sound like the starter is still spinning but not engaged in the flywheel....doesn't happen every time, just every now and again. Any clues?
sounds like you got a bad starter. or your solenoid may need replaced. I look at it like this, if it starts every time, don't complain. it is better than being stranded at walmart in the rain. (experience talking there)
It is a bad solenoid on the fender, not a bad starter.
The contacts inside the solenoid are fried (or close to it) and won't release. Instead, they stick, and continue to supply surrent to the starter.
Now, the other option is that the starter isn't running, but intead is being turned by the flywheel even though the power has been cut off to the starter. If this is the case, then the bendix gear on the starter is bad, and needs to be replaced.
Now, when you hit the key and it just "whirrs" and does not turn the motor over. That's the starter "bendix". The gear part of the starter is not expanding out to engage the flywheel. You can buy just that piece and pull nose off starter and replace it.
Now, if you try starting motor and you hear the starter still running AFTER motor has started...that's the solenoid sticking(points stuck together).
You might also want to confirm the ignition key has "returned" to the run position. Mine gets sticky in winter and when I release key after it starts it tends NOT to always rotate back far enough to activate the power(for radio, ect.) A simple wiggle of the key will usually correct it. A shot of WD40 helps too.

I think I have the solenoid problem.....It starts the engine up fine...but it's like i can still hear it running, disengages from the flywheel, for a second or so afterward....I had ruled out my ig key sticking....so solenoid....here I come!
This is pretty normal, I hear it about every third time, especially on cold mornings. I work in a parts store, and I've heard about everything. I've got the original factory starter on my truck (79).

If you think it's the solenoid put a test light on it and you'll see it lit when
you hear the noise. Put the light up by your wiper arm so you can see it.
I'll add my 2 cent you may have a bad bendix spring or gear and it's draging.
orich
Some newer reman starters seem to turn longer after disengaging than the old ones. The one in my 69 takes a bit more than a second to wind down after I start the engine.
Yeah....this is a reman unit from a local parts store.....I remember about 9 years ago when I lived in Lansing, I had to go through 4 different "reman" starters from a "Auto Zone" or equivalent store.....It turns out their "remanufactured" starters only had about half the parts replaced that they should have....so many were still defective right out of the box.
