I have searched for this topic, but only found stuff in 1980's models.
I have been fighting an on going problem of the starter "lagging" on occasion. It would just drag and stop. If I held the switch, it would heat the solenoid. It was doing it about every 3 starts. I changed the starter, battery, starter solenoid, and grounded the battery directly to the frame where the starter is grounded. This helped to where it only does it once in every 10 starts or so, but there is still a problem.
Had the same problem and did a bunch of reading on the subject, this past weekend I measured my ground cable, cable from battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter, found the shortest run I could make for each, went to the parts store and bought 1 gauge cable for each with the correct ends already made up and installed. Took about 1.5 hours total and everything is working like a champ, I think mine was a combination of too much heat, possibly bad cables that are too long and cables of not sufficient gauge for the size battery and starter I have. Hope this helps!
