87 6.9 auto with hypermax turbo... what to watch and look for
the truck has been set up with gauges and all... pros or cons of this turbo?
also has a "dual power" auxilary tranny?
I just purchased/installed the Hypermax this last summer for my '89 7.3L 5sp. It offers very little power increase in around town driving situations but when passing or towing it shines. I turned up the pump and see up to 7lbs boost and 900 on the pyro when passing at 65-75mph. No need to even down shift out of 5th, just mash it and feel the boost. I like the idea of minimal boost around town as I believe its got to be easier on the motor not being at boost pressures all the time. I bought a PSD intercooler off ebay for 175.00 and need to get that installed at a later date.
I installed 4 of Hypermax's "pulse" turbo kits before we discovered ATS back in the 90s. They were good performers, just didn't like having to bolt the turbo mount to the back of the pass side head. They all had between 9 1/2 and 11 lbs of boost, and that was with a baffled resonator!
As far as I'm concerned, it's hard to go wrong with an 87.
Put a Hypermax kit on my first straight truck old international s-1900 6.9 worked great. With 8-10K on it it B-4 turbo would barley maintain 60mph up-hill after the install 65 easy loaded heavy 14K or so. once in a while i would push it to 70 but it was twistin pretty tight at that speed. I am looking a adding a turbo to my 93 E-350 Class C motorhome when taxes get back. Have been looking at the Hypermax kit for the E series. Also looked at the ATS web site and I could only find kits for the F series. If anyone knows if they make a kit for the vans drop me an E/M and let me know. I like a wastgated turbo better. Had a banks kit on my old chevy 6.2 it was OK till about 256K when it blew the motor crank broke in three pieces.......guess I was pretty lucky getting that many miles out of it
i have a hypermax 6.9. i have a boost and exhaust temp guage but was wondering how to hook it up. also wondering what would be thought about stacks for exhaust. one other thing... i have a gear splitter and cant get the thing to work. if you know anything about it i would love to hear.
