I have a 2003 F350 with the 6 speed manual tranny, it came with the cat, but the automatics didn't.
It is a federal offense to remove the cat, but the fed doesn't do inspections the states do. In my state (MD) they did an inspection when I first registered the truck after moving from Maine. The state does emission testing but not on diesels. I have a neighbor who just cut out oppenings in his cat for the bigger exhaust and put the pipe straight thru the cat, looks like he still has one. You wouldn't be able to tell unless you cut it off.
Florida doesn't test either. Even when they did, they didn't test diesels. Back when I had my '85 Mustang I cut the converters out, and took the heat-sheilds (top and bottom) and tack-welded 'em in place over the straight pipe so it looked like the real-deal. It passed a number of inspections with no problem (guess they didn't care, really. No way could they be dense enough to have thought it really had 'em, but they slide their mirrors under the car, and if it looks like a cat....
Hmm. My '99 psd doesn't have 'em either. I'd like to get a bigger down pipe and straight pipe, but not in the budget at this time.
From what I have read, the reason the 6 sp have cats and autos don't is because the computer controls the shifting/fuel input to prevent or minimize black smoke. Computers can't tell us when to shift and MAY cause more pollution if you hit the pedal hard to get black smoke. It is illegal no matter where you are to remove the cat if you have one. But practically speaking, if they don't smog test, just gut the cat and reinstall.
ColtM4 my 6spd does not have a cat. Just because a state doesn't test emissions it doesn't mean you can remove any part of it. This is a Federal Law! You can not alter any emissions component from the way it came from the factory. Will they catch you, probably not. If they do it is a $10,000 fine. I'm not trying to pound on anyone. Just want you to understand how the Federal Law is. I'm from WV and own a repair shop that does state inspections. Here we do not test emissions. If any emissions related component is removed or broken it must be repaired or replaced or the vehicle is to be rejected. In our front office we have a poster stating this law for everyone to see.
