Catalytic Converters

I am going to replace the exhaust system on my 1989 F150 with the 4.9 6 cylinder engine. I am considering not installing a catalytic converter.

How will this affect this engine? Will I need to make any other changes so the engine runs smoothly?

It won't affect the engine at all but considering the cost of a universal cat($60-80) and the fact it will clean up tailpipe emissions there is no good reason not to install one.

A lot of people claim the 4.9 sounds bad without them. I haven't heard one without in person so I can't give my opinion on that.

It shouldn't have much of an effect. Maybe a rich less torque but a bit more power in the long run. The biggest change will be in sound. If your concerned about sound and tail pipe emissions, a high flow cat is your best bet.

It will also stink. Use a high-flow cat (49 state legal), they aren't that restrictive. You can hold them up to the light and see through. Not like the 50 state legal cats.
