Question Universal catalytic converters?

I just did this online assist inquiring about a catalytic converter and "Felix" insisted that I buy an entire new exhaust system instead of just a universal catalytic converter. He said it was cheaper and less work doing that way instead of just buying the universal and replacing it. Am I missing something here because the universal costs maybe $100 and the new exhaust costs me over $400?

Felix works off comission! I used the catco universal cost 69.00 3" in and out never had an emission issue.

Well, Felix sucks. You validated what I suspected. Thanks for your suggestion.

Just use the Universal cat, I used one to replace my old failed cat for emission and used a GM style that doesnt require AIR while still using the AIR and passed alright. Only problem is, there isnt alot of room for welding in the new cat and you may need to find a pipe expander to rent so that you straighten out any pipe issues. Sawzall's work great for removing the old cat though.

Sorry it took me a while I had to find it. I got it from summit racing Part# CTO-6907. I attached mine with 3-hole Reducers for easy removal. Got them from summit also. Part# SUM-64754. i welded the reducers on the cat then bolted to exhaust. Don't forget the gaskets for them. If ya want to use a gasketless system try the Flomaster ball/socket reducers. Cost more than the Cat though.- Bob

I wound up using Magna Flow. The cats were not a perfect match for the existing pipes, but the installer was good with a blow torch. After installation, I do not know if is because of the freer flowing cats or that the old cats were partially blocked, but the Bronco runs much better. Also had to replace the O2 sensor after the cats. Runs way better and better gas mileage. Sweet.

Anyone smogging without cats ( or gutted cats ) ? I've been told most well running cars will pass without em, but I haven't tried myself. Most people have said give it a good tune up and go. I'd appreciate any input, the PO yanked the cat's and if I don't need to replace em, I'd rather not right now.

Thanks !

I gutted it because it got plugged from my old engine-I passed emissions with a cutted cat 6 years in a row. Then I re-did my entire exhaust after that due to cracked manifolds and just threw a cat on there as it was cheap. Passed the next 5 years no problems, actally sold my gutted cat case to a friend for his FSB. I did keep my engine tuned and running good, oil changed, also ran 89 octane. That's my experience. - bob

I just had my second cat just crack on mine. So the exhaust shop is making me a custom y-pipe and cat w/o2. will cost me about 400 due to the shorty headers I put on.
