does anybody recomend this swap buddy has a 460 wants to swap in a diesel hes been told the cummings is a better motor could someone help with some knowledge on this one
The Cummins is a great motor . Check out www.fordcummins.com for some info on swapping a 5.9L Cummins into a Ford pickup. They even have swap kits available to make it easier. Beware though, it is not going to be cheap, by any stretch of the imagination.
The cummins would be a easier swap. Dunno about better. Not all the electrical stuff to incorperate. Go to "www.fordcummins.com" They have good info and i think they even sell kits to help out the swap.
would it be cheaper to buy a junked ford with a 7.3 and swap it in and which motor is a better choice i have a 99 f350 with a 7.3 in it and i love the power!!!!
Probably not, the electronics are the problem with the PSD. If you want to do a 7.3 then the earlier IDI motor would be much simpler, just don't expect PSD power levels. A few of the 7.3 IDI motors were turbocharged from the factory, and there are aftermarket turbo kits out there, which would help make some more power. The thing about the 12v Cummins is it is very simple to wire and you can make a ton of power for not a lot of money. The Cummins would be my choice for a swap like this. Don't get me wrong I love my PSD, I just wouldn't want to try to put one in a truck that didn't come with one originally.
If you are looking at doing the swap look at spending atleast 8000 grand it will prolly be closer to 10,000 not worth it. The people that want a Cummins is the power freaks where money is no object. If you want a Cummins go buy a rattle trap Dodge.
If you want a diesel truck buy a diesel truck trying to do a conversion isn't worth it you spend more than you would buying a diesel truck. Just to buy and install a rebuilt 7.3 IDI is going to run you 6000-7000.
Cummins is a good motor but its not all what its cracked up to be just because its made by Cummins means its good. The old IDI and 7.3 PSD trucks are just as good h*ll look how many are on the road compared to Dodge Cummins.
The old 460 burns lots of fuel but its one of the best gas engines Ford made it has lots of power and will last a long time. You just have to get used to the 6mpg which does get expensive.
What Kenworth said ! Unless someone gives you a PSD it's expensive . You can buy a mid '90s F250/350 with a 7.3 cheaper then converting the 460 ! I think the Cummins swap is right up there in price too . I know I saw pics on this site of someone who swaped in a 6.9/7.3 in place of a 460 maybe you can do a search for it ?
A cummins swap isn't a deal at all, helped on several chevies. Just running what trans. you want is the biggest problem. No need for fancy swap kits. Most high-schoolers can do the swap IMHO.
thanks for the info will pass it on to buddy im trying to convince him to keep 460 as toy and buy new psd 7.3 for the money he's going to dump for the swap again thanks for the info
