I think I remember the distributor guru on the FordFE.com site, Faron Rhoads, say that he would never use the Crane setup!?! You might take a look on that forum and do a search.
FWIW, I have the Pertronix II system on my hi-boy, and it did fail once. The beauty of the Pertronix is that IF anything ever goes wrong, you just stick in the set of points and condensor that you kept in your glove compartment, re-time, by ear if necessary, and you are on the road again. That's what I did, and was back to civilization again in no time. The failure was when it was pretty new, and hasn't given me any more trouble in about 3 years now. The Pertronix II has better electronics, will not burn itself out if you accidentally leave the ignition key on when engine's not running, and supposedly stretches out the spark duration when you are running under 3K RPM.

My Pertronix has been in for over 8 yrs, only changed the cap and wires once. (I've saved a bundle on points in that time).

I have used and recommended the Pertronix. I am happy with the reliability, about 70-80,000 miles without a problem.
