My sons 73 f100 has the overheated starte syndrome wieth the headers just about touching after dimpling the header tube. I read an article about a permanent magnet starter that sold me on the value of these starters . http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...er/index.shtml
I called the company in the article and they don't make one for our trucks with a FE because of a fit problem. I found a company which said no problem and got it and the solonoid hitting against the block kept it from bolting up so now I have to call the company and return it. Has anyone found a company that makes these for a 390 in a 70's truck? Have any of you used the Nippon denso type with any sucess? I' ve used the starter blanket and header wrap and they don't help. I have to get away from the heat soak problem.
I run a jeg's pro-starter. It's slightly smaller that the stock starters, has more starting torque and is desgined to take the heat of a nearby headers. It was about $200 through Jegs. So far, no issues. And, I run at a reasonably high compression ratio. I can reccomend it without reservation.
There's a couple decent photos of it installed with headers on this page: http://www.thedreyerfamily.com/69f25...FPAheaders.htm
It's not a mini-starter, but I run a rebuilt Napa starter on mine. So far it's worked fine. I even ran it on the old 360 for a while, I pulled it when I put the 390 in and it was in good shape.
thanks. They don't come cheap. But you get what you pay for. Great fitment, never any sealing issues at the heads or collectors. The ceramic coating also helps to keep things (starters) cooler.
I don't have headers, but I picked up a gear reduction starter on eBay for a reasonable price. The mounting plate can be rotated relative to the starter body so that you can clear obstructions in a tight spot. It's amazing how much better than the stock starter it is. My remanufactured engine is still pretty tight compared to the worrn out original, but this little starter motor spins it easily.
I agree, the ebay ones I've seen for around $150 are porbably OK. I just like the service I get from Jeg's. If it turned out bad after a month or so, I know they would take care it. heck, it's probably made by the same chinese guy anyway.
