Hard starting 91 4x4
I hope someone can help. I have a 1991 4x4 4.0 6, It is a crap shoot on wether it will start easy or not. Sometimes it just turns over and over and over until you think the battery is going to die,next time it fires right up. I have checked all the usual things - gas,spark,plugs,etc. I am at my wits end. Any suggestions? (starting sensor has already been replaced).

You should be able to hear the fuel pump operate for a couple of seconds as soon as the ignition key is turned to the "run" position. This suppiles the initial fuel/pressure to faciitate starting. An easy way to listen for the fuel pump activity is to remove the gas cap and have someone listen as the key is turned from "off" to "run". The fuel pump relay is controlled by the engine control module. You may have a loose connector in the circuit associated with the fuel system. Another possibility is that the relay or the fuse for the fuel pump may be at fault. An easy way to trouble shoot the relay is to swap it with one of the other relays that are co-located with the fuel pump relay.
Check the relay first as it is the easier of the tasks.
