I have only the Craftsman flare nut wrenches and have never had a problem, even in central NY, salt country where everything is loaded with rust. On really bad fittings where I know I'm going to break the line anyway, I snap it and use a socket or box end wrench though, so I'm only working on good condition unions with the FN wrenches.

I agree that my Craftsman FN wrenches will get by on good clean fittings. And the really bad ones where the line is toast are no problem as I cut the line off and use a regular box or socket. It's the in between ones that I am concerned about.

Snap-on seems to have the best recommendations, but for their price they should. Other than MAC there does not seem to be any clear cut option for an alternate. I saw a really cheapo set of crows foot FN wrenches at Harbor Frieght the other day. At 8.50 I almost bit as they had enough metal around the wrench to appear resistanct to spreading. They also had enough metal to ensure they would not fit anywhere with resistricted access to the fitting. Which on my truck is almost everywhere. I came to my senses and took a pass.

I po'd the guys at the shop, the shop has 30+ year old snap~ons that are only missing one size. (family shop, most stuff won't wonder) I needed a metric one oneday so I came home grabbed mine and went back to the shop, they said I spent a pretty penny for those snap~ons, I laughed and explained I bought them when Williams made Lowe's Kobalt brand. Still haven't stretched but one of the guys keeps replacing his Craftsman as they stretch. I learned a long time ago, there are some tools you can't scrimp on. Just got lucky and found them at the right price.

I have a set of those - in metric. They are adequate for the price, but as you mentioned, a bit thick for fitting in some places... Sadly, I bought a SAE and Metric sets of Craftsman FN wrenches not long before this thread started... probably should have bit the bullit and splurged for Snap-On... But it's hard when they are so much more...
