Breaking a soft/slightly rounded flare nut [solved]
Working on an oil change on my 02 Super Duty and came across several stripped bolts, including this rounded 5/8" flare nut on the return line to the 4R100 transmission. My 5/8" flare wrench fits snug, but it pulls off when any pressure is applied.
Normally I'd get my benzo torch and apply some heat, but I'm not sure that's wise given the amount of leaked ATF in the vicinity (and diesel lines not far away).
Are there any other techniques to try other than a pair of vice grips?
clean "well" with a solvent & toothbrush, lightly file smashed corners square again & soak it with blaster a few times this stuffs the best & use 2 flare nut wrenchs if your flare nut wrench pulls off would it be a metric nut?
Side note.. is there a safe way to loosen all the caked on mud & dirt on the transfer case? It's hard to reach with a pressure washer. PO lived on a dirt road.. it's much cleaner now than it was when I bought.
Agreed to clean well...a wire brush between the nuts (Oh, No! hehe) followed by some PB Blaster. Soak well. Mebbe some Vice Grips on the top nut and a wrench on the bottom. Work it slow back and forth, etc, till she breaks loose.
Side note: A stiff one inch putty knife, eye protection, then power blast the snot out of it.
