Does anyone know how to properly check the ball joints on an Escape. I find there is some "fluttering" when driving over a series of small bumps. It almost feels like the shocks are shot but I am almost certain they are fine. Any ideas - thanks in advance. The truck has about 40000 miles.
Hi and welcome to FTE
I dont think I've seen worn ball joints on an Escape yet.
To check them you lift the vehicle up with a jack under the frame so the wheel is hanging unloaded then push and pull on the top of the wheel while watching the ball joint. If there is more than 1/32" of movement it's shot and needs to be replaced.
It may be easier to have someone else push and pull the wheel while you watch.
A common problem on Escapes that causes a rattle or flutter type noise is worn sway bar end links. Try pushing and pulling them up and down to feel for free play. There shouldn't be any.
