okay everybody, here it goes. i have a 5.0 out of a 86 crown vic in my early bronco. the air filter and throttle body face the driver side fender. this interfers with instaltion of a master cylinder. question no. one, can the throttle body be rotated clockwise? it solves the master cylinder problem but will it still operate properly? question no. 2, i've been debating swapping out the lower and upper intakes so i could have the throttle body and air filter pointing to the passenger side of the vehicle which would solve all my problems. it seems that the fuel rails would also have to be swapped out so the pressure regulator would be on the driver side also. would i have to swap the lower intake with the new upper intake? i'll take any info on the differences between the two intakes and what would be required to make the change
ps., rcrawler, thanks for all the help in the past!!!!
hey amtocco, I hope someone can give you a solid answer to your question. I'm about to tackle the same situation. Didn't start yet but I can see that the throttle body is in way of the brake m/c just like you said. I saw a T-bird with a 5.0 efi that had the throttle body facing the pass. side. sorry I'm not much help. good luck
most people install a 5.0 with the intake facing the passenger side fender. i bought my engine because i got the entire car for 200$. i have seen it done the way we are thinking but some mods are obviously going to have to be done. the other option is to buy the other intake. the only problem with this is the fuel rail has to be changed to accomodate the intake facing the pass. side. the fuel pressure regulator on my 86 5.0 is on the driver side rear section of the fuel rail and if you flip the intake you have now it will interfer. i will probably buy a lower intake and upper intake that are complete with sensors, throttle body, and fuel rail so it will be a direct swap without having any mods. my other option is to move the master cylinder over. my truck is off road only so retaining the stock apperance is not an issue. hope this helps.
Hey amtocco, are you using with or without power brakes? If you are using power brakes, will it still interfere with the throttle hsg.?, even though the master cylinder is at an angle?
sorry it took so long. i believe the power brake booster is the easiest wat to aviod the throttle body. once again this will not work in my application because of the narrowed front end. i think easiest solution is to swap intakes. 88 to93 will work for you and ebay is a good place too start looking. all mustang intakes face the passenger side. make sure you get one with the fuel rail included because they are different from the one you have.
hey Jason, I'm planning to use an intake from a 88 5.0 HO from a Mk?? something. will this intake fit under my early bronco hood without body lift?? A few issues ago I asked and you said that the truck style was way to high and your absolutely right (as always)!
Why don't you use a intake from a Mustang or perhaps a Explorer. The throttle body is on the passenger side (not sure about the Explorer). I don't believe you will have a problem with fuel regulator
You will need both upper and lower intake manifolds
I am not sure since I dont have any of the models with throttle body on driver side. But since they come both ways, I am pretty sure the upper plenum is reversable. Also the 93 and newer has a curved adapter that puts the throttle body in a better position for air filter. The fuel rail should be an easy swap. The bone yards that you pull your own parts are cheap and plentiful with the right donor cars. Lincoln Mk 7, T-Bird, and Cougar are perfect and were available wth HO motor.
I used a Cougar 5.0 for my swap, which had passenger side intake. The crown vic 5.0 is reversed, but I think it could be swapped. As far as air filters go, I used a crown vic box w/ the bottom cut out to clear hood, and fabbed some brackets to attach to passenger inner fender. I found a hose from a Probe V-6 that fit perfectly to the Cougar intake to crown vic air box. These parts cost like $10 from a salvage yard, and uses standard, cheap crown vic air filters. No expensive K&N's or anything.
