the enginge temp gauge is not working in my 96 150 and i was just curious if anyone had any answers as to what may be wrong and how hard it would be to fix
I had the same problem on my 302 some months ago.
I replace the water temp sender (it is cheap). The sender which feeds the gauge is the one with just one threaded pin on it. EFI engines have another 2-pin one near the thermostat, which feeds the EEC, so locate the right one.
One other thing you can do to try and isolate the problem:
Ground the wire going to the sending unit (Germanguy is corrrect, the gauge sending unit has a 1-wire connector). This should make the gauge go into the "HOT" region. If the gauge still doesn't move, the gauge/instrument panel, or the wiring between the sending unit and instrment panel is bad...
Bob, I agree. It is worth to check this once you have found the temp sender.
On the 302 the temp sender is between the intake manifold and the distributor.

i was just over at my mechanics yesterday with a buddy while he was getting the oil changed in his car and they checked it and told me it was the gauge that was bad.and you are correct about where the sender is located.
