Just changed my leaky thermostat gasket and replaced thermostat, now the temp gauge is going crazy. Driving down the highway at a steady 65 mph the needle on the gauge never gets into the "normal" range (always below), but when driving in town (25 mph) the temp gauge will get to past the "L" in normal very quickly. I step on the gas and it drops back to the "N" after a couple of seconds. Any ideas? Bad thermostat? Still air in the system? I checked to make sure it was full of coolant, I bought a new radiator cap, running out of good ideas as to what is causing this.
I have had the same problem with my '93 F-150 302, except that mine never gets past the "m" in normal. It did fluctuate like crazy, but not the same as it would if it was electrical. Last weekend my radiator decided to give up the ghost, and when I removed it, I also removed the vent tubing coming from the upper intake manifold to the radiator. This thing was plugged up and obviosly not working properly. After cleaning it out and re-installing with the new radiator, I haven't seen the problem. In short, (too late) check to see if the venting system is working properly. I belive it was air in the system causing my problem. Good luck!
