I'm all about power, and just like Carrol Shelby said: "Too much power is just enough". I have a 76 F100. The 302 was replaced by a 390 out of a 66 or 67 Fairlane GT. It will move, but 65-70 MPH is fast enough for me in a truck. Is it safe at higher speeds? I would surely hope so, but I have no intention to set a land speed record in it.

The fastest I have been is in my old 73 Mach 1. With a built 351C, and factory 2.55 gears, it would fall flat on its face off the line, smoke 'em going from L to 2, and a good chirp going into D. It was sheer hell on top end. I bet a buddy of mine (who had a 73 340 Challenger) that I could hold it WOT as long as I felt dumb enough to keep my foot in it, and he didnt believe me. We both learned quite a bit (hey, I was 17 or 18) about gear ratios and top end RPM. He had 3.73's or something- not sure.

I had the car several times buried at an indicated 120, with more on top...to where the front of the long hood seemed to sway back and forth, almost in a "U" configuration. It had a definate light feeling to it. Dunno how fast for sure, but it would pull pretty good after hitting 120. That was about 16 years ago, and I still miss it.

Ford's EFI trucks of this era are limited to about 108mph by the computer. I've been to 111mph in my 89 Bronco when I was 16 or 17. It was a 302, AOD with 3.55 gears and 31's (That's how I fooled the computer into leting me get faster then 108). I did the math from the tach because the speedo topped out at 85.

I've had my 93 Cobra to about 150mph on a downhill section of highway when no one was on it. Also it had been recently repaved. That car gets to about 135 in 4th very fast. It doesn't pull OD well and needs room to get up to 150. The car was a 140 speedo and it was burried far on that run.

Also the Bronco wouldn't hold OD at full tilt, it was a very fine line between max speed and a downshift into 3rd and only about a 105mph top speed.

Fastest I've been in my F150 is about 80, but it likes 65 better.

Just reminiscing

My trucks a 86 f150 XLT Lariat extended cab short bed with the 302efi and a aod. I've kept it about as close to stock as I possibly can for a 36 almost 37 year old truck. The fasted I ever got it was 104 while I was loaded down with about 40lbs of vacation stuff and 600lbs split between 4 people on flatlands though south Georgia on my way back to north carolina. When I looked at the speedometer it had just split the M off from PH I wouldn't have even known how fast we were going but my sister in the back seat had Google maps open lol. I won't be pushing my old truck that far again anytime soon. But I had just spent a week visiting family in Lakeland FL and was ready to sleep in my own bed lol.

My almost completely stock F150, 302, AOD got up to around 100 mph back in the early 90’s… I was “racing” a friend in a 85 suburban up a major highway in the weee hours of the morning… looked down and noticed the needle pointing somewhere around the end of my odometer if I recall. Assuming the scale continued on past the last marking of 85, I believe that would have been somewhere around 100. The truck felt like it was floating down the road and not particularly stable at those speeds, and if memory serves, it was wound out pretty far for that engine… I didn’t maintain that speed for more then a few min I believe.
