292 compression test

i posted a while back about some problems with my newly rebuilt 292.i did a compression test.tell me what you think.
1-140
2-145
3-145
4-135
5-145
6-145
7-145
8-140
are these numbers o.k.?it sounds like the number 4 cylinder has a light knock to it.it sounds like it`s coming from the lifter valley.i`m burning oil,and sometimes it smokes a little, especially on takeoff.the engine also rocks back and forth and shakes the whole truck.i`m running 50 to 70 psi oil pressure with 40 wt.synthetic and lucas mixture.thanks for your help.......wayne

what do you think could be wrong?the guy that built my engine is a gm mechanic.i`ve had a couple of guys look at it and they said it sounds fine to them.i know that these solid lifter engines are louder than more modern engines and you can expect to hear the lifters ticking.but what i hear is a louder tapping noise coming from the number 4 cylinder.i`m new to this area and don`t know a mechanic that i can trust.i am mechanicly inclined but lack the knowledge to tackle it myself without a lot of guidance from you guys.do you think you could walk me through it........wayne

handx2 thank for checking your compession , number 4 is your trouble take your rocket cover of at a cold motor <ps> would not drive this truck till we fixs it ok , want you to check your clearance of that valve have you ever dun your own valve clearance,s ?if you havent get back to me ok 10 psi is to much in that pot could be bent valve ? rings must be good leaking tru your valve im thinking would make the loud tap and lost psi to let me no ok
my 292 very still at idle after a good warm up like that all day waiting 4 your repile f700

handx,

To check your valves, do so with engine hot, while idling set both at .018. This is not hard to do, may make just a little oil mess, just be careful not to bust your knuckles as your wrench will be jerking around. Your valves will be pretty quiet when set correctly.

thanks motorcyclist,i did set the backlash, but i think i set it to .019.is this right?what i`m worried about is that my valve may be making contact with the piston.do you know how to check that kind of clearance.

Unless you have a fairly radical cam with lift above .490, you shouldn't worry about valve to piston clearance.

hand,

When you set your valves, do you appear to getting enough oil to your rocker arms? If the rocker shaft hole is not alined with the oil hole correctly, you could be starving for oil therefore causing more tappet noise. if you see a lot of oil running down from the rockers, this is likely not the problem.

quote''If the rocker shaft hole is not alined with the oil hole correctly,''i don`t want to seem dense,i know what the rocker arms are.but which part is the rocker shaft and where is the hole that it is supposed to line up with?there is a lot of oil coming up through a copper tube and dumping in the top of the head.the rockers appear to be wet but i don`t remember them dripping any oil.i`ll have to take another look at it maybe tomorrow night.thanks for your patience and your help.i`m a little bit embarassed to ask some of these trivial questions, but i really love that old truck and i want to learn all i can about it so i can make sure that it`s done right.thanks

handx2, If you have oil exiting the curved end tube in both heads then your rocker shafts are lined up correctly. Did you have your engine bored and sized for new pistons? If not and just rings were installed after some honing there could be some piston slap that you are hearing, which may go away after warmup. Did you have the valve ends of your rockers resurfaced? Probably not, and if they are very worn it makes it difficult to get a good accurate clearance adjustment with your feeler gauge. What happens is your feeler guage tells you there is .019 clearance and there may be .028, resulting in more noise between the rocker and valve. This doesn't sound likely, but you might try pulling the pushrods of the suspected cylinder, rolling them on a flat surface, to see if they are straight.

Before going to bed I thought of one more easy thing you could check. At the rear of the heads on the intake side is an unused bolt, not associated with the intake. It should not be longer than 1/2 inch, just enough to seal the opening. Longer bolts can contact and interfere with the pushrod.

46y,my truck only had 50000k before i blew the engine.i was able to use standard size everything.the tapping noise doesn`t go away even after warmup.i think that my rockers are probably alright because if i overtighten them even slightly it smokes.am i right about that?i did have the heads reworked, but i`m not sure if it included the rockers.how long should the intake bolts be.could they cause a problem to?i`m gonna pull that bolt tonight and check it.i want to check the pushrods to,but it may be this weekend before i have the time.how long should that take?thanks for your help.i can`t wait to try this
