I just bought a 2002 Ranger and like everything about it except for the "clunk" noise it makes when I shift, primarily from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. The dealer says that it's normal, but I've never had a manual transmission that did that. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
I also have a 2002 Edge which I recently noticed "Clunked". When I drop it to second it's loud. Even going back up. I have not asked the dealer about this as I have gotten no where with my main problem which is "rattling" in the engine. When my compressor kicks on and the clutch is not depressed, the engine rattles pretty loud. Ford Engineering tells me it's gear lashing. I am still trying to find out more in hopes I can alleviate the noise. Do you have that as well?
Hi, Elisa. Boy, you've got a noise that I (mercifully) don't have. The Ford people told you that you've got gear lashing? What does that mean and how did they propose to address it?
I can't help but think that you might have some thing loose or really worn in your rear end, or drive shaft. I guessing it might be one of your u-joints on either end of your drive shaft....they shouldn't be bad, but I've had to replace ones on older rangers with low miles for similar reasons. With the vehicle in gear, and the brake set, try turning the shaft, there shouldn't be any play in it.
Just took my '01 4wd in - see my post today. Shop called Ford, replaced rear drive shaft and yoke. Some improvement. How many miles on yours? Mechanic said rear splines looked fine, no excessive backlash.
