I have a clunking noise that occurs when I mash on the gas in 2nd gear. Sounds and feels like the transmission is hitting the cab. I have a 78 with a 300I6, NP 405 TC and an NP 435 4 speed manual transmission.
I can feel it in the floor board under my right foot. I'm not sure what it could be, the motor mounts are as tight as i can get them, but it seems like the shifters are moving a lot more than they should be. Please help.
They may be tight, but how's the rubber holding up?
With the hood open, you should be able to see the engine a bit from the driver's seat. Start it, out it in gear, and slowly let out the clutch with the brake still on. If the engine moves more than a little, the mounts are torn, and need to be replaced.
I tried your method last night with the brake on, i could move the motor ~1", just looking at the oil filler cap. I also was able to re-create the clunking noise by letting the clutch out.
So i think i will replace the motor mounts and the tranny mount to see if that helps. I just restored this truck and it didn't do this before, i can't remember if the mounts looked worn out or damaged. They are cheap enough to just replace though.
Thanks for the replies i'll post the results from new mounts in the near future.
