'98 4.6 Windsor startup noise

Yes, i have spent HOURS reading all the posts about this issue!!, but mine has gotten worse lately. '98 F150 150k miles. I've owned for 50k miles and has always made the startup noise that i would guess is PS. I use castrol oil and motorcraft filters.

Mine lasts only about 2 seconds at startup, but sounds really loud lately and different than a knock or dry lifters noise. Since it is always worse when it is cold, i am guessing it still must be the PS issue, just getting worse.??? Could someone please describe what their PS sounds like and does anyone elses go away this fast?

If it is the timing chain tensioners, is it ok to just ignore it?

I just tried switching to Mobil 1, and will see tomorrow morning if it helps at all.
Thanks for all the info on this issue.

What weight oil are you using? You might try 5W20 to get oil to the top of the engine faster.

I could try a bit thinner but i live in Phoenix with lows rarely below 50 and warmer than that in my garage. Highs can still be in the 90's in November.

I have run 5w20 in mine since I got it. I've towed over 6000lbs in 98 degree, very humid weaqther with the a/c on and have never had any problems.

What brand oil filter are you using. Many oil filters have a weak anti drain back valve made from nitrile rubber versus silicon(e). Plus the construction of certain oil filters don't allow for a good seal for the anti drain back valve. Fram and Fram clones are the most "notorious" oil filters for causing cold start up clatter and extra start up wear. Your best bet is to try a Motorcraft FL820S oil filter. It has a silicon(e) ADBV and is constructed real well. The Motorcraft filters have stopped the cold engine start up noise for me. Plus you can get them for the bargain price of $2.97 from Walmart!

all fixed!!!! sorry but oil filter didnt do anything so i took it to ford and told them everything about this start up noise, and they started it up the next morning, and told me its the starter, i just said fix it, 400 bucks later, problem gone, i'm happy it could have been alot worse (PS). they said it was a worn out appendix on the starter assembly. good enought for me, whimsey thanks for the info anyway.

Glad you got it fixed. Just sorry it wasn't something inexpensive as the oil filter. Oh well, all is good now .
