My Gateway has 512 MB of ram, a 2.6 Ghz P4, so the only thing that it lacks is a good video card. I played through Doom 3 with the lowest graphic settings, and on a small screen, and it still did not play smoothly. Problem is, the GE force 5900 vid card costs over $200 wherever I can find it.
So, since I got through the game, I am going to wait for a while to upgrade to the 5900. It should get cheap after a while.
I like Doom 3, because it is challenging, but not a pain to get through. I got hooked on fps games when I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It is also a very good game.
Oh yeah, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is good. So is Allied Assault: Medal of Honor.
I played the he11 out of Soldier of Fortune II - first at single player, then at multiplayer. It has a great multiplayer engine. Unfortunately, it's kind of dying from what I understand.
Unreal Tounament 2004 is supposed to be good if your looking for a multi player game.
Not a big fan of shooter games... Don't hold mey interest very long...
I'm a big fan of driving games. I've bought nearly all of them for X-Box, PS1 and PS2. So far, the best I've found is Project Gotham for X-Box. That game is HARD. I can play most driving games and usually win in Expert mode within a few tries. Project Gotham is on a whole separate level of difficulty. Even in beginner mode, winning is not a given. Excellent car feel and reaction. I have heard the second version is "softened up" a bit... a shame, but I'm still having fun with the first one.
I own Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Both games keep me hooked in, especially when playing on the Internet. There are also some custom versions of the game that people have created for it - they have one with modern soldiers, cities and weapons. I know someone also created battlefield 1918 which I have played before. I definitely like the games you play over the Internet, it's fun to play with a bunch of other people. It can get pretty crazy if you get 40 or more people playing at once!
