Hey, I've been thinking of getting a new computer game to play around with, it's been a long time since I've bought a new one. I'm a little behind on what the latest and greatest game is. I'm leaning towards a shooter, but I'll take anything. I've seen y'all talk about computer games before, just wondering if anybody had any suggestions. Thanks!
Depends on what you're looking for. if you like Single player type shooters. I would recommend Far Cry or if you have a strong heart, I'd give Doom 3 a look. (i've never been so on edge playing a game like that before) If you want to get into multiplayer online games Battlefiled 1942 or battlefield Vietnam are a couple good FPS games.
Also if you are interested in MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) is bringing out EverQuest II soon, and they are putting out a large expansion for Star Wras Galaxies, both good games.
Just think, you could buy the original Halo, which is still the best game on the market, for a low price because the sequal is coming in Nov. My friends and I have been playing it for over a year and no one has grown tired. Then, if you like it, you could buy the sequal once you're tired of the first or once it gets cheap!
Well, I'm gonna go with Battlefield 1942 and its expansions. It sounded the most attractive out of all that I read. Not to mention there is a sequel coming out next year.
As far as the MMORPGs go, I've become quite addicted to Final Fantasy XI online. They have something like 33 servers (worlds) with people from all over the world. I think they recently passed the 1.5 million players mark
I've had fun with "Day of Defeat", a WWII on-line shooter that I got in a package with Half-life. You guys have got me interested in Battlefield 1942 - wonder if anyone has played both? Are they similar?
I found Doom 3 to be great visually, but became quite predictable. If you paid attention you could tell when the next monster would jump out at you, or when the next health would show up , or next PDA.
I like FPS (First Person Shooters). I reccommend (even though it is old) pick up a copy of Half-Life, htere are numerous mods for it plus it will get you ready for HL2 which comes out shortly.
I also enjoy Call of Duty. This is a WWII simulated FPS. It has a single player mode as well as an online multiplayer. The multiplayer is great in my mind because you are not just fighting stupid AI characters, you are actually battling against your peers (in most cases at least.)

SpikeDog...
I have played both. BF1942 has its good and bad areas as do all games. When I played it the game seemed cumbersome like I was moving though water. My Comp is not the newest but I know what I'm doing when it comes to my system, so it wasn't the computer. DoD is a great mod gone full game. My only complaint is... just beacuse you fired your weapon a split second before someone else shouldn't mean that if your aim was true you shouldn't get that guy as well, but I digress. You can find lots of great info on the DoD forums as to gameplay and such. BF1942 also has forums.
It all comes down to the kind of game that you prefer.
I also enjoy Diablo 2 and it's expansion
Far cry was great but again predictable to me.....
Take your time and read the boxes pick one that you feel will give you hours of fun.

Ask if you would like some more info
I am actually part of a gaming clan with approx 50 members so I have heard or seen it about most games.
NightReaver - thanks for the comments. I always try to get on DoD games where I have decent latency (>100). That seems to help the "running through molasses" feeling.
