Hey, got a 92 f-150, 300, 115000mi. Burning plenty of oil, about a quart every tank, around 220miles. Smoke when it sits overnight (valve seals?) Losing oil pressurre after 15min of driving (I do have the dummy gauge) when In neutral. I'm currently using 10-40 valvoline. I get average about 14.2mpg. I have done all the tuneups. Plug #5 burns out regulary, oily and black. I'm using autlolites instead of motorcraft and it (#5) seems to last longer. I have taken the codes and nothing major comers up (538 & 116). My truck runs great and I love it.
My question is: What kind of oil would you use if you had my truck? I live in North West Arkansas, where it never really gets really cold about 25 as the coldest. What kind of engine flush or additives would you use?
Sincerely,
Anders
I'd try a 15w40 diesel rated oil first, just to keep it from burning as much. It has detergents in it that will free up stuck rings, which I think is part of your problem.
I'd pop the valve cover off and throw some new valve guides on it. That should help with the smoking in the morning.
Get a real oil pressure gauge on it and tell us what the pressure is.
I agree with Rusty. I'd stick with the idea of RotellaT or even Delvac over the Delo 400. I used RotellaT without burning oil. Switched to the Delo 400, a group II oil. Now burning off a little....so you may also burn more.

I'm sure you meant valve stem seals instead of guides.
A motor using oil that fast isn't going to fix itself with a different kind of oil. Sounds to me like the motor needs some internal repair ( overhaul ). Just my opinion.
Most likely it will need work. But if an oil ring or two is stuck due to the sludge caused by the 10w40 (yes it does cause sludge, big time) then it WILL use oil at an amazingly high rate. Freeing 'em up with the detergent diesel oil might just do the trick. It's worth a try before pulling it apart anyway.
Switched to RotellaT and startup it sounds like I'm hitting the gaspedal to the floor and it last about 2-3 seconds then it idles kind of loud before it settles down. It makes a slight extra noise while driving.
Before it used to die down quick, before i restart it and it was fine. I notice I lose oil pressure quicker (have not been able to install the mechanical guage yet) installed a new thermostat and flushed the radiator and it runs cooler.
I'm kind of worried about the noise. When I changed the oil, the old oil seemed fine, nice black, I let it settle down and checked for "stuff" but the oil was fine. What should I do, switch back to "valvoline Maxlife 10-40"? Any other oil I should try? What about additives? Should I run the engine for a while and then drain the oil and try again with rotella, because the diesel oil might have loosened/stirred some stuff up It still runs good. But there is definite extra noise added. I will try to install the new gauge this weekend, but it is also opening weekend of muzzleloader.
