Here's the skinny. Got an 85 f150 2WD with a 351W, 112K on the motor as far as I know. Just bought it a couple of months ago. No extreme wear on the motor as far as I can tell (I Actually got a good deal on this one.) Anyways, the previous owner burned 10W-40 Quaker State, I'm a Valvoline kind of guy and put in some 5W-30 due to the winter month approaching (will use 10W-30 in summer) cause it's gotta sit outside now and it probably burned a quart within 750 miles. So what I did was add a can of some "RESTORE" in it and have put on probably close to 500 miles without adding oil into it and it doesn't seem to be burning the oil like it used to (The rear seal has a some what moderate leak, nothing to be concerned about but annoying). So my question is, anybody out there have any opinions or experience with using "Engine Restore"? Of course the dude working at O'reilly's said it's good stuff and I've never read anything bad about it, but will it cause any effects in the long term to my motor? Or should I just stick with 10W-40? And while I'm on it, I noticed that most of y'all prefer Mobil with Valvoline being the secondary choice. Is there any argument as to which is better for my 112K motor.
You're .02 cents will be considered rather seriously.
Nick, 'RESTORE' is engine oil with lots of wear fighting additives put in. In particular, there is alot of Zinc in it. Supposedly it helps fill in scratches and smooth things out. DF
so, no problems in the future if i start using this stuff with every oil change? i take it by you're response that nothing bad can occur from using this stuff.
It wont hurt anything as far as I know but its benefits are temporary so it has to be added at each oil change.I`ve used it myself in a 1989 F-150 with 190,000 miles on it with good results.:-)
Well, I put some engine restore in a while back and have noticed that after about 1100 miles on the 5W-30 it it's starting to slowly burn the oil again. So, like poopey said, it's short term. I went ahead and put some Valvoline 10w-40 the last oil change just cause it's gonna get cold here soon, but I think next time I'm gonna try some shell rotella (15w-40) and see how that burns if the valvoline doesn't hold up like I want it too. Already got a forum on the shell so I have a good idea if i wanna use it next.
