Since I will be building a 390, I need some ideas for assembly lube. You know, the stuff you smear on the cylinder walls, rocker tips, and bearings. Here's what I was thinking:
1 part 40 weight motor oil
1 part STP
1 part Moly grease

I am getting close to done on my 302. I used Permatex assembly lube. Looks to the crane super lube. It was red, semi liquid and real sticky. My machine shop recommended it.
I think all of the above are good. Anything that will stay in place and has anti wear additives is good. I agree with jshira. Unless you are really exited about making the stuff, it would be just as good and easier to buy one lube. You don't really need that much anyway... well a 390 probably takes more than a 302. I used 1/3 of the bottle.
MotorKote is supposed to come out with a grease soon. I have heard that they began testing this summer. I have used Slick-50 grease with some MotorKote added to it for everything that needs a heavier lubricant.
I use lubriplate #105. I think I bought my last tube at NAPA. Its designed for engine builders. I've used it for years on my aircraft and auto motors. Its designed to stand for a while, if you have to sore a motor.

I'll second the motion for Lubriplate has zinc in it and works well on tappets and cams.
If the engine is going to be fired up in a day or so after assembly the rings and bearings
got a liberal application of engine oil, and the pump was always primed.
