It's almost time for my next oil change and I trying to figure out what I'm going to use. Right now I'm using Rotella 15-40. I'm wondering if any one has used the lucas oil treatment and if they liked. If I go that route I use it with the Rotella 15-40. I'm also thinking about going to synthetic Rotella 5-40 but I've been told its not a good idea to switch to a synthetic oil on older engines because you will develop leaks. My truck has 65,000 miles on it. Any thoughts would be great.

 

Mine's an "02" with 75K miles and I switched to Rotella synthetic about 25K ago with no ill affects. No leaks, drips, etc. Blackstone reports are excellent and actually a bit better in some areas using synthetic.
Lucas products are very well known and I have heard positive reviews on most of their products. I personally don't use the additive. I do know of a few PSD owners that do. Perhaps they'll chime in.

 

Man, if there's one product you should stay away from, it's lucas oil treatments.

Do a search in FTE's oil and lube website and BITOG.

You do not want that foam causing garbage in your oil fired PSD.

Oil by it self is more than capable of protecting your motor.

 

65,000 for a diesel engine is barely out of new.
The synthetic thing is a myth. Switch back and forth all you want, you will likely have a cleaner engine inside. Rotella T synth is actually GIII oil and is not PAO or higher group V, but is pretty good GIII.

I USE IT. In the summer not winter. Ever notice anyone that knocks someone elses product has something they sell that is better?

 

Funny I tend to agree. I am not one for snake oils etc. But I really do like the Lucas upper cylinder treatment. BTW I started running Biodiesel in my truck about 3000 miles ago. They tell you to change your fuel filter after the first tank or two of bio, because the bio cleans out all the gunk and deposits left behind from petro diesel. My filter both times was spotless, I am guessing because the Lucas was doing its job and keeping my motor and fuel system clean. So I vote for yes on the Lucas.

 

I've used the lucas fuel and oil additives in my gas engines and stand behind it 100% for those but just not sure for the diesel. I'm still a rookie when it comes to the PSD. The Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer says it increases oil pressure & if the injectors work off of oil pressure that would be a plus right.

 

The oil stabilizer made my truck run smoother and used less oil between chnges. My primary oil is Rotella. Since I've changed injectors and hpop I haven't tried it. I may now wait till next spring.

The oil treatment is added to the oil. The upper cyl treatment is added to the fuel. bjvagts the oil treatment will make your oil thicker, not real good in a cold winter climate.

 

You can draw your own conclusions from this un-scientific but yet very practical experiment. Even the store display with do the same if you get it going fast enough.

It always amazes me how people who are very well informed about motors and such, will go out and dump big bucks into some type "miracle oil enhancer" without even blinking an eye, and will defend that product on the basis of "it sounds better" and "higher oil pressure".

Dare I break out the UOA's on Lucas mixed with other wise execellent oils compared to ones that didn't have the additive?

Compare the MSDS for the Lucas and a 80w90 gear oil. Should be an interesting comparison.

If you want higher oil pressure, go with a heavier oil, not only will it not foam, it will last much longer, have less wear, and will be much cheaper.

I'm not a big fan of anything that says "oil treatment" on the bottle. Pretty much registers as "snake oil" in my brain, so I don't use any of them. That's just me.

That link is biased towards Schaffer's products, though without the blatant sales pitch. I think the testing method is valid, but he should have used the same oil in both sides and just added the addative to one for a direct comparison.

 

Oil is used under pressure in a closed area. That wheel spins so fast without any additive it doesn't even pick anything up. I owned and worked on otr trucks and have seen the benefits. I'm not trying to sell anyone anything, just saying I use the product.
