try this out. Uses a weight to assist opening and closing:

Neat site. I wonder if you couldn't do away with the tall post and the cables (or chains) if you used a bearing on the top "hinge"-possibly a truck axle for the whole shebang. The top bearing woud be pressed on a collar that slid up and down (put a grease fitting and seals on it), and the gate top hinge "tube" would then press down over the outer edge of the brearing. I think a motorcycle fork neck tube, with the "axle" post allowing it to slide up and down would also work. Great little concept. I saw a very nice garden gate a local blacksmith made that used the angle cut tube as a self-closer.

Problem with bump gates (assuming they're for live stock control) is, a lot of animals will learn to push it them selves. As mentioned in the link, you could use a cattle guard, but if you do, why would you need the gate? JM2C. Rob

How about a solar powered gate opener with a remote? Thats what we use on the ranch, along with cattle-guards at the pasture cross-fences so you don't have to have gates.

well, sadly, the gate is not ona ranch, just the front of our driveway on 5 acres. but mom likes to leaves the horse out so he can graze. i don't think they wanna deal with cattleguard, and a bump gate seemed most economical for our situation. still gotta get out and mess with it. been busy...
