i have a 94 eb 302 bronco and when i turn a corner or go over a little bump in a lawn i here a click..click noise from thr rear axel. sometimes iam also hearing it from the front end. i just had the u-joints replaced in the front by the tires. could it be a locker in the rear? do i have a stock locker in the rear axel? or ciuld it be caused by water in the axels.? any help would be very gateful before i go tearing into it. also what is a good gear oil to use for the front and real axels?
If you are 100% sure the click is coming from the rear I would start looking at the u-bolts on the leaf springs, and all other suspension related components first.
If it aint that, then my next question for you is......do you have the truck in 4X4 when you hear the click? Do you have automatic hub lockouts? If you do I would look at them real close....right before I **** canned them, and installed a new set of manual hub lockouts, like Warn or MileMarker.
You should also look close at the u-joints on the front and rear drive shafts.
As for a locking dif in the rear......not stock from the factory you dont. At best you will have a Ford Trac-Loc rear(fords name for a posi-traction rear). You would need to ID the rear using the info sticker in the drivers door jam, or checking the tag on the rear.
As for gear oil......I use any high quality stuff in the correct weight, and if you do find out you have a trac-loc rear, you will HAVE to add friction mod for the clutch pac.
thanx, i will check my u-bolts and suspension tonight when i get home from work. i will keep an update as well. and iam not in 4-wheel dr. when this happens.
Sounds like rear driveshaft u-joints...if they start squeeking soon then they are REALLY shot! Easy to replace...go with the heavy duty u-joints with zerk fittings...that way they can be regreased on a consistent basis.
usualy when it is u-joints you will hear the click when you let off the gas or when you first push the gas. But you are claiming it is when you hit bumps or turn corners. I would put my truck up on blocks and get on a crawler and start shaking and wiggling everything under it. if something clicks or is lose you will find it.
Sounds to me like your limited slip clutches are sticking. I know it could be a number of things but if its on cornering or over bumps and you hear it from the rear axle I'd look at that first. If you haven't had the fluid changed when they do that have them open it up and look at the clutch plates.
the ls in these rear ends wont have a clutch plate. there are spider gears and a s shapped spring that is all. it is possible but when that ls starts to fail you will know it for sure. it will begin to bind up and sound like your truck dropped anchor while moving. not a great feeling

I thought the Ford Trac-Loc rears had a clutch pack with both friction plates and metal plates.....the s spring is used to keep pressure against the pack.....no?
I will look for some pics for ya........
yea im pretty sure. I had my 8.8 ls go out on my 100 miles from home. that when i did the 9" swap. if you check out my super ford page you will see pics of the old 8.8 rear end with the spider gears chewed up. http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/...il.php?id=4158.
my rear axel code is 19 , is that the correct code? i will be changing the rear axel fluid on saterday and see if that makes a difference. plus my breather hose that comes off the front axel is hanging down and the valve at the end of it has come off. i went trail riding couple of weekends ago and went through some mud holes.i think i got water in the fron axel. but for the rear i tried to put it up on jack stands last night and the jack i had wouldnt lift the beast. i will borrow a better jack this weekend and put it up on stands to shake some suspension comps. around. as for the u-bolts on the leaf springs they are good and tight.
My opinion is still in the rear end. I think you said it occured on turns and bumps. That would indicate to me that it was an issue when the wheels are rotating at different rates. Kemical burns posts alot and has been helpful to me so I won't argue but in my experience with my bronco, I have clutch plates and when they go out I get some chirping and what could be described as clicking when cornering.
Good luck and post what you find, even if you don't think it matters it might help someone else.
