I get my quality information from consumer guides. AFAIK it is up to date. Chevy is getting on the list with the foreigns for above average quality. Ford, mainly, is not. I have researched this deeply as it provides a delimna to a money meiser like me.
I appreciate this, (my wife drives an Mazda RX-7 - but it is still owned by Ford).
I am a bit dissapointed that you guys don't recieve competetive vehicles to a Subaru, like the Mondeo or Falcon that are sold in other markets.
I will venture a guess on the reason there are few vehicles that are offered against an Subaru awd.
While I'm sure that they are great vehicles, they just don't have the winter capability vs something like an explorer. What I mean by this is, if you look at the Montana, ND, SD, WY, areas, most of our roads are not paved, and take days, even weeks, to plow in the winter. So if you end up with an half ways decent snowfall and toss in some good wind, you need a vehicle that that has some good clearance, and 4wd. Not only do we need a decent clearanced vehicle, plus 4wd, most of us also tow some pretty good amounts, which is prolly why I don't see many AWD cars in the country.
Not to mention pickups and suvs sell in North America, cars just don't sell like they use to.
People do not respect your personal space in a small car in any way.
I also drive a small car (very small infact), and believe me, trucks etc. respect your personal space when you overtake them doing 145mph in an original Mini Cooper...
It gets 45mpg to (not while doing 145mph though ).
Just don't ask me about its reliability, but at least its cheap and easy to fix when it breaks down though
No Ford has the highest quality. What are you going buy. I really believe Ford has the highest quality trucks ion the road today. Just ask any former GM owner. GM has some serious qualiy issues with there trucks. Some very serious ones.Piston slap for one. To me thats serious and they stilll have it. GM has cheap components in there trucks anymore.
GM may have piston slap but so does ford, while working at a ford dealership i had plenty of experience with ford engines having the knock noise either with mis abused, mis used, or just to much miles either way both suffer the same its just how people use there trucks, and as for brand loyalty goes "natta" i only get what i can afford to get me here to there. Its hard to be loyal to one brand cause if you are and you see another brand making something better rite away people go to the other so in perspective you cant go wrong with none of the three brands cause all three put out good products.

While not at all scientific, as a former and current GM owner and a former late model ford owner, you could ask me. If you take the motor out of the equation, I think they're about equal in quality in my experience. My ford got bought back because of the bad 6.0PSD and I'd traded a perfect 01 dmax in on it so I'd guess you know what I think about the quality in that area.
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't look at Ford again.
Ah Jeb yeh I remember your problems. That was unfortunate. Gettin carried away as usual. It would be curious to know if your former truck is still running great. The duramax I mean.
my dad is a Ford guy and has only owned fords as long as I have been here (27 years). He also spends a lot of time in the garage fixing his new taurus and his ranger, while I haven't openend up the hood in my altima since 2002 when i bought it. He just can't accept that other manufacturers can make a descent product. I know a lot of people who will only buy 1 brand of vehicle and not even look around at what's out there when it's time for them to buy. I don't understand this way of thinking

My Dmax runs perfect too.
Also it's true GM usually leads in Domestic quality - check around, do a couple web searches. They too are usually behind imports.
But do the imports build a car that you WANT to own???
And if so, is quality more important to you than a car that has the more features/power/space???
Logical Heritic has imformed us quality is more important to him...
I know I don't mind spending that bit extra time and money looking after a car (or anything for that matter...) if it is something that I want.
Geez, I would go without food for a week if that was the difference in running costs between my Ford, and something like a Toyota Camry...
Quality definitely matters to me, but I wouldn't buy an import, no way no how. I'd buy ten Dodges and have Hemis and Cummins diesels and everything before you could give me one foreign truck. America is where my money stays as much as I can help it.
I have yet to see how the imports have higher quality aside form cars such as BMW, Mercedes, etc. At least where I work, there is a steady stream of import cars coming in for repair, as well as american. just as many imports break down. I have seen high milage imports and domestic vehicles. I just don't buy the "import quality is better" stuff. As to GM quality bing best of the big 3, I just can't see that either. At least if they count the quality of the cavalier/sunfire cars. They will run for a long time, and get you from point A to B, but they also fall apart quickly, and become ratty.
AM I brand loyal? I can answer both yeas an no. I will say that I will not own a GM truck or an import. Only ford or dodge when it comes to trucks. As to cars that is a different story. I will buy the one which best suits my needs/wants.
Imports do break down. But what is really important is how many and how often. It is rated in per hundred units.
Lexus has the highest quality for the first 5 years. Infinity has the highest quality for the next five. Toyota is all over the place on the above average quality lists. Honda has several on their. Acura. Not so much mazda and mitsubishi. Not a lot of american vehicles on the list. Its statistical. Its logical. Even if we do not want to believe it. It is a fact. Japanese vehicles provide higher quality. The lemon list is a whos who of the big three. While the high quality list is a whos who of japanese companies.
Anyone who doesnt believe. Has obviously never owned one. I have driven nearly ever make of non luxury car made. Toyota mazda mitsubishi honda ford chevy subaru buick geo kia mercury nissan oldsmobile pontiac saturn saab and volvo. The suprise out of the bunch was saturns quality was very high.
