8 valve cover bolts were on the 351 C,351M & the 400
The only way to tell the difference between the 351M & the 400 is by measuring the stroke.
The driver side valve cover may have a decal with info on it.
Look for 351M/400 engine series with the ACTUAL engine size by itself under the other part.
I already know its a 400 engine!! All i want to know is what car it came out of? on my sticker it says conforms to us epa regulations to 77 model year if that means anything. but let me make my self clear, it's a 400 i already know this
There is a number cast into the block down near the starter which can be helpful in determining the type of vehicle that the engine came out of altho it seems that FoMoCo played a little "fast & loose" with the engines sometimes, probably due to demand at a particular factory. Your casting number should read D5AZ-A2 or something like that which means that it was a block cast in 1975 and installed in a "full size Ford". Unfortunately that's about all you can tell from the casting code and there just aren't any other codes on the engine that will narrow down what vehicle it came out of.

Ooop's sorry I missed that part in your very 1st post!
ok thanks for your help guys i finally found out the guys number so hopefully he will be able to tell me exactly what car it came out of if not i guess im screwed
If it still has the original distributor, you can take the Ford number off of it and fairly well narrow down the ORIGINAL vehicle into which it was installed. For example, if it reads D7AE-12127-A. It would have been in a 1977 LTD. Were it to have read D7TE-12127-A, it would have been a 77 pickup. I hope this helps you out some!
