well, i put in an AutoMeter Lunar series pyro the other day and love it. granted, despite the 4 hours of frustration and such, it was worth it. but now my next challenge, what should my pyro read for normal? i mounted the probe in the stock downpipe right after the turbo. runnin at 55 MPH and around 1600 rpm, its reading around 4-500 depending on the road. is this normal? its a '95 reg cab 2x4. the only upgrade so far is a home-made TYMAR, and no CAT with the pipe coming out in front of the back tire.
my other problem is 2 mornings in the past week and a half or so, it has had some trouble starting. no change to the fuel or anyhting, just tryin to get out and start it fairly early like normal. granted, here in texas, its not cold. it will crank and crank with lots of white smoke, but won't turn over. eventually it does, but not without some worrying.....any ideas?
If your pyro is mounted in the downpipe you will hear that referred to as "post-turbo". Mounting the sensor (thermocouple) in front of the turbo (pre turbo) will give you a different reading. There are many variables but your egt should be no more than 1250 pre turbo. It can get higher than this easily but high temperatures for prolonged periods should be minimized. Post turbo readings can be 300 degrees lower than pre turbo readings. They can also be very close to each other. IMO the pre turbo set up is safer, and engine safety is why you install a pyro in the first place, so why not?

HEY WHATS UP, I HAVE A 94.5 PSD THAT I HAVE ADD THE PYRO GAUGE (4INS BEFORE TURBO, "THATS WHAT AUTOMETER SAID")I DID THIS BEFORE I PUT THE NEW DOWN PIPE ON SO IT WAS EASY TO DO SO WITH THE STOCK DOWN PIPE OFF THE TRUCK.."JUST PACK THE DRILL BIT WITH GREASE TO NOT GET METAL SHAVINGS IN THE EXAUST PIPE". ANYWAY WITH 4IN DIAMOND EYES EXHAUST WITH 3IN DOWNPIPE CRUISING AT 65MPH EGT'S WHERE AT ABOUT 650F-700F. THEN I PUT ON THE aFe COLDAIR INTAKE CRUISNING AT 65MPH EGT'S WHERE AT ABOUT 600F-650F. NOW I INSTALLED THE SUPERCHIP POWER PROGRAMER #1700 WITH THE HIGH SETTING(OFFROAD, TOW TO 4,000 POUNDS MAX) EGT'S ARE AT ABOUT 700F-800F AT 65MPH, BUT WHEN I HIT FULL THROTTLE AT 3,000RPM'S MAX SHIFTING (STICKSHIFT) THE EGT'S ARE A LITTLE OVER 1,000F. ONCE AGAIN MY EGT GAUGE IS BEFORE TURBO AND TEMP READINGS WILL BE A BIT HIGHER THE AFTER TURBO...SEE IF U CAN INSTALL THE EGT PROB BEFORE TURBO (JUST MY OPINON) FOR A BETTER READING...THANKS FOR READING..SORRY FOR THE LONG POSTED BUT I HOPE THIS INFO WILL HELP.
ERIK
well, so far it looks as if i'm running ok. when i installed the pyro, i thought i was putting it in the right place, er, best place rather right after the turbo, but did it mistakenly...oh well, gonna be getting a new 3 in. DP eventually, and when i do that i will move the probe to the new place pre-turbo. is there a diagram somewhere as to show the best place to put it pre-turbo, because there didn't seem to be a lot of room....
If you crawl under your truck on the driver side, look up above the oil filter and you should see the exhaust manifold and the up pipe to the turbo. You could drill and tap the manifold, or drill the up pipe and use a clamp on type probe. I have mine in the up pipe with a clamp on probe.
I was watching Trucks TV this afternoon and they said the best place is in the exhaust manifold. Does not look like a fun job! It woulld be the best reading I would think. Just my 02.
As long as you have it before the turbo you are gonna get the same reading. There is less then a foot of pipe between the end of the manifold and the turbo, not enough to make any difference in reading. I was gonna drill and tap mine, but after talking to a bunch of guys who had the clamp style probes on thier trucks for years with no problems, I figured it wasn't worth the extra effort. Another thing to consider is drilling and tapping the manifold creates a lot more shavings that could possibly find thier way to the turbo.

Hey Im just about to install a pyro gauge on my 96 PSD and I think ill try the clamp style probe. You have to remove the exhaust manifould if your going to drill and tap it so metal shavings dont get into your turbo and destory it. Where can I get the clmap style probe?
I used to work in instrumentation and we used them by the hundreds. Try an industrial supply house, or someone who sells automation and instrumentation to chemical plants and refineries.
EDIT- also check your wire colors on your existing probe. White-red is type J, yellow/red is type K. Won't be accurate if you mismatch.

Reason: more info.
where is the best place to draw power for my pyro? right now i have it running from the power wires to my stereo....that is until i USE the stereo and the bass draws too much power and my needle starts bouncing to the music...any better place to tap into for power?
352V8, I know I wasn't clear but you still have to drill a hole in the up-pipe to use a clamp on probe. If you put a little bit of grease on the bit and go slowly you won't have to remove the pipe.
Putting it in the exhaust manifold isn't that difficult at all. The problem is getting the guts to do it.
I did mine with it still on the truck. Drilled and tapped, used axle grease, made sure I got all of the chips out, then used one of those magnets on the end of a stick probe to clean it the rest of the way out. Easy to do. 2 years now without a problem. Recently, I got a thermocouple from International so that I could split the signal to run my Di-Pricol gauges and Edge Attitude at the same time, dropped right in to the fitting I was using before. Used the red/yellow wires for both.
